When you begin your motorcycle riding journey it can seem like there’s a lot to learn. From different bike styles, brands and sizes. To clothing for touring, track and more. We’ve compiled some of our tips for new motorcycle riders to help you along the way. (Thanks to our amazing customers who submitted some great ones too).
Check them out below!
- Dress for the slide, not the ride.
Basically – wear your gear! It may be tempting to nip out in a t-shirt and shorts when it’s hot, but it’s best to be prepared just in case things go a little wrong. Motorcycle gear is designed to be abrasion resistant and will save your skin in the event of a slide.
- Ride your own ride
Don’t let anyone make you feel pressured to ride beyond your limits. It can be easy to feel like you have to keep up with the pace when riding with others, but ride at the pace and level that is right for you!
- Don’t look where you don’t want to go
Try to avoid fixating on the areas you don’t want to end up. Our body will follow where our eyes go. Keep looking ahead and try not to stare at areas /objects you’re worried about riding into.
- Assume everyone else on the road is blind
Don’t assume that other road users have seen you. Pretend every other road user is blind and ride defensively. Be prepared for the unexpected and keep your eyes open.
- Don’t be afraid to ask questions
No one expects you to know it all the moment you get your licence handed to you. If you’ve got a question or you want to learn more about something – ask. We’re always happy to help, but you’ll find bikers are generally a friendly bunch so don’t be afraid to reach out to more experienced riders too.
- Enjoy it!
Riding a motorcycle can seem like a daunting prospect when you’re starting out, but it really is one of the best ways to travel. Try to relax, and enjoy the ride!
